A Modern Community Hub
UG Group (formerly 2WR+Partners) played a key role in designing the Columbus Aquatic Center, a LEED Silver-targeted facility that enhances recreation and community engagement. Working closely with Hecht Burdeshaw Architects, we infused local architectural influences to create a space that reflects Columbus’ identity. As a result, the design seamlessly integrates into the city while prioritizing functionality and sustainability.
Smart Design for the Columbus Aquatic Center
This Aquatic Center is part of a larger development that also includes a City Services Center and a multi-level parking deck. To ensure cohesion, UG Group designed the Natatorium and all outdoor gathering spaces. One standout feature is the “community quilt”—a shared plaza symbolizing Columbus’ diverse community. By incorporating pedestrian-friendly spaces, the design fosters interaction, accessibility, and engagement.
Balancing Function, Sustainability, and Aesthetics
The site presented challenges due to poor soil conditions and surrounding infrastructure. However, strategic planning allowed the team to overcome these obstacles. To create a cohesive aesthetic, materials, scale, and orientation were carefully selected to match Columbus’ existing cityscape. Additionally, the Aquatic Center entrance serves as a striking focal point, allowing daylight to filter in during the day and glowing at night.
Sustainable and Functional Public Spaces
In addition to visual appeal, sustainability was a top priority. The design organizes building services within a durable “brick bar,” ensuring longevity. Meanwhile, public spaces feature glass and metal finishes to enhance natural light. Beyond the structure itself, the “community quilt” combines hardscape materials with lush landscaping, providing shaded seating areas for visitors. As a result, guests can enjoy a comfortable, welcoming environment year-round.
A Lasting Impact on the Community
By blending innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful planning, UG Group delivered a premier recreational facility for Columbus. Most importantly, the project strengthens the community by creating a space where people can gather, relax, and stay active.
