Double Churches Pool

Columbus, Georgia

Transforming a Legacy Pool for the Community

Originally built in the 1970s, Double Churches Pool had long served as a key recreational facility but no longer met the needs of the growing community. With the construction of a new city natatorium featuring a 50-meter x 25-yard competition pool, the opportunity arose to revamp the facility into a more accessible and engaging destination.

UG Group (formerly 2WR+ Partners) collaborated with Markey & Associates, the Columbus Consolidated Government, local swim teams, and Columbus Parks and Recreation to redesign the space. The goal was to create a well-balanced environment for competitive training, recreational swimming, and family-friendly leisure activities.

Modern Features for an Enhanced Aquatic Experience

The renovation introduced several key improvements, ensuring accessibility and usability for all visitors:

  • Zero-Depth Entry Pool – A shallow, kid-friendly area with play equipment for younger visitors.
  • 25-Yard x 25-Meter Pool – Designed for lap swimming, training, and recreational use.
  • New Pool House – Features include:
    • Modern locker rooms for swimmers.
    • A multipurpose room for community events and training.
    • Administrative offices for facility management.
    • A concessions area for refreshments.
  • Pool Equipment Building – Houses upgraded filtration and maintenance systems.
  • Covered Exterior Area – Provides shade and seating for spectators and guests.

A Community-Driven Recreational Hub

Through strategic upgrades, UG Group transformed Double Churches Pool into a dynamic, multi-use aquatic facility that supports local recreation programs, swim teams, and casual swimmers. The new design ensures an optimal balance between competition, training, and leisure activities, making it a welcoming space for all ages.

Beyond functionality, the revitalized pool strengthens community engagement by offering expanded programming and better amenities. Improved accessibility, upgraded infrastructure, and modern recreational areas ensure the facility remains a vital resource for years to come.

By blending innovation, sustainability, and usability, UG Group helped Columbus Parks and Recreation create an inclusive, high-quality aquatic center. The project showcases how intentional design can transform public spaces, fostering wellness, social interaction, and long-term community benefits.
